Evanescence didirikan oleh Amy Lee dan mantan gitaris Ben Moody.

Mereka berdua bertemu dalam sebuah kamp anak muda di Arkansas.

Saat itu Moody mendengar Lee bermain lagu "I’d Do Anything for Love" (But I Won’t Do That)" karangan Meat Loaf menggunakan piano.

Selanjutnya, pasangan ini mendapati bahwa mereka sama-sama tertarik kepada Jimi Hendrix dan Björk.

Setelah itu mereka bersama-sama menulis lagu (yang pertama adalah “Solitude” oleh Amy Lee, diikuti dengan “Understanding” oleh Ben Moody, “Give Unto Me” oleh Amy Lee.
