Jim Carrey lahir di Newmarket, Ontario, Kanada pada 17 Januari 1962 dari pasangan Percy Carrey dan Kathleen Oram.

Ayah Jim Carrey, Percy Carrey merupakan seorang musisi sekaligus seorang akuntan.

Jim Carrey merupakan anak bungsu dari empat bersaudara.

Jim Carrey pernah bersekolah di Blessed Trinity Catholic School, North York dalam periode singkat.

Setelah itu, Jim Carrey pindah ke Agincourt Collegiate Institute dan hanya bertahan selama satu tahun di sana.

Jim Carrey kemudian pindah ke Northview Heights Secondary School.

Karena krisis ekonomi yang dialami oleh keluarganya, Jim terpaksa harus berhenti sekolah dan membantu kelaurganya mencari uang.

Ketika keluarga pindah ke Burlington, Jim Carrey menempuh pendidikan di Aldershot High School. (1)
