Willem Dafoe lahir dari pasangan Muriel Isabel dan William Alfred Dafoe. (1)

Dalam keluarga tersebut, ia memmiliki saudara kandung bernama Donald Dafoe.

Semasa muda, Willem Dafoe mengenyam pendidikan di Appleton High School.

Setelahnya, ia melanjutkan pendidikan di University of Wisconsin, untuk belajar drama.

Akan tetapi ia segera bosan dengan pendidikan tersebut.

Pada akhirnya, Willem Daofe memutuskan untuk meninggalkan kuliahnya.

Kemudian ia bergabung dengan perusahaan teater, Theatre X yang berada di Milwaukee. (2)

Willem Dafoe terlibat dalam film 'Heaven's Gate' pada tahun 1981.

Akan tetapi, adegan yang menampilkan dirinya tidak ditampilkan ketika editing.

Berikutnya, ia mendapatkan peran dalam The Loveless pada tahun 1982.

Film tersebut mengisahkan tentang gang motor.

Pada tahun 1983, ia terlibat dalam film horor bertajuk The Hunger.

Akan tetapi ia hanya mendapatkan peran kecil dalam film tersebut.

Karier Willem Dafoe mulai melejit pada tahun 1985.

Kala itu, ia terlibat dalam film ‘To Live and Die in L.A’.

Mulai dari masa tersebut, Willem Dafoe kerap membintangi berbagai film terkenal.

Pada tahun 1990-an, ia membintangi film seperti ‘Tom & Viv’ (1994), ‘Victory’ (1995), ‘The English Patient’ (1996), dan ‘New Rose Hotel’ (1998).

Pada tahun 2002, ia memainkan peran sebagai Green Goblin dalam Spiderman.
