Karena ketertarikannya terhadap akting, ia melanjutkan pendidikan di Napean Drama School, University of Western Sydeny. (2)

Joel Edgerton mengawali debutnya sebagai aktor dalam film pendek berjudul Loaded.

Film tersebut dirilis pada tahun 1996.
