Robert De Niro lahir di Greenwich Village, Manhattan pada 17 Agustus 1943.

Robert De Niro adalah anak dari pasangan pelukis Robert De Niro Sr dan Admiral Virginia Holton.

Orang tua Robert De Niro berpisah ketika ia berusia tiga tahun dan setelah itu, De Niro dibesarkan oleh ibunya.

Robert De Niro menempuh pendidikan dasarnya di PS 41 di Manhattan hingga kelas 6 sebelum akhirnya ia dipindahkan ke Elisabeth Irwin High School.

Setelah itu, De Niro bersekolah di sekolah swasta Little Red School House.

Dia mendaftar di Sekolah McBurney untuk menyelesaikan studi sekolah menengah tetapi kemudian beralih ke Rhodes Preparatory School.

Namun, dia keluar dari keduanya dan mulai mengejar karir di dunia akting dengan mengambil kursus akting di Stella Adler Conservatory dan berlanjut di Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio. (1) 

De Niro menikahi aktris Diahnne Abbott pada 1976 dan dikaruniai satu putra.

12 tahun kemudian keduanya memutuskan bercerai pada tahun 1988.

De Niro kemudian memiliki hubungan panjang dengan model Toukie Smith dan mereka memiliki putra kembar.

Kemudian pada 1997, De Niro menikah dengan Grace Hightower.

Namun, pada November 2018, De Niro dan Hightower mengumumkan bahwa mereka telah berpisah. (2)

De Niro memulai karir aktingnya ketika ia memainkan peran sebagai singa dalam produksi sekolah Wizard of Oz pada usia 10 tahun.

De Niro mendapatkan peran kecil dalam film ‘The Wedding Party’ pada 1963 beradu akting dengan Jill Clayburgh.

Pada 1973 De Niro tampil dalam dua film besar, yakni   ‘Bang The Drum Slowly’ and ‘Mean Streets’.

Pada 1974, De Niro didapuk sebagai aktor terbaik yang bermain di film Francis Ford Coppola 'The Godfather Part II'.

Dia juga memenangkan Penghargaan Akademi Bergengsi karena memainkan karakter Vito Corleone.

De Niro mencapai kesuksesan besar besar setelah merilis 'Mean Streets'.
